Dizziness and Vertigo in Hamilton

old woman dizzyDo you ever feel unsteady on your feet or that things around you are moving or spinning? If yes, you understand how distressing dizziness and vertigo can be.

Other symptoms, which can occur due to a medical condition or injury, include the following:

  • Light-headedness
  • Faintness
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Blurred vision, especially when moving your head quickly
While medications may alleviate symptoms, they can cause drowsiness, making activities like driving dangerous. Chiropractic care offers a drug-free, conservative, and helpful alternative.

The Common Causes

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo. It occurs when tiny crystals of calcium carbonate detach and fall into the wrong part of the inner ear canals. This can lead to intense vertigo sensations, often triggered by simple movements like turning over in bed or looking up. Older individuals are particularly susceptible to falls due to BPPV.

Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s Disease is a distressing condition characterised by tinnitus, a feeling of fullness in the affected ear, fluctuating hearing loss, and vertigo episodes lasting from 30 minutes to over 24 hours. This condition is linked to excess fluid buildup in the inner ear. Early chiropractic intervention may help with vestibular rehabilitation and exercises, minimising long-term damage to hearing and balance.

Vestibular Migraine (VM)

Also known as Migraine Associated Vertigo, VM affects one in ten migraine sufferers. Symptoms include vertigo episodes lasting from a few minutes to 72 hours. Chiropractic care may reduce the frequency and intensity of these attacks, providing longer periods between episodes without the need for medication.

The Importance of Accurate Diagnosis

At Hamilton Chiropractic Centre, Dr Ian (Chiropractor) will perform a thorough assessment of your symptoms and a medical history will be conducted to determine the cause of your dizziness or vertigo. Understanding whether your symptoms are due to a peripheral problem (information coming into your brain) or a central problem (interpreting this information) is crucial for successful care.

While some cases may require referrals for further testing, most can be managed without the need for additional specialists.
